Tax Exemption 2025

In early June 2025, the Thai government approved a new tax policy (add link) that exempts foreign income from taxes as long as it is introduced into Thailand within two years of its acquisition.

This measure offers legal certainty and peace of mind to digital workers, freelancers, and remote professionals concerned about double taxation. As long as income is transferred within that timeframe, it will not be subject to Thai income tax.

Destination Thailand Visa.

The Destination Thailand (DTV) visa is designed to facilitate remote work or freelance for foreign citizens who wish to temporarily live in Thailand while developing their professional activities in companies located outside the country. It also offers the possibility of residence for people interested in local cooking classes or Muay Thai courses.

As remote work and digital nomad lifestyle gain popularity, Thailand has recently positioned itself as one of the most favorable and accessible destinations for independent professionals. The new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), launched in July 2024, is specifically designed for digital nomads, remote workers, or freelancers who want to combine their professional activity with living in Thailand. This multiple entry visa not only allows remote work but also supports participation in various local Thai initiatives.

The DTV represents a significant advancement in the country's efforts to attract this profile of professionals. By offering extended stays and allowing various visit purposes—from work to cultural activities—Thailand reinforces its appeal as a reference destination for the global community of location-independent workers. Although this visa requirements are comprehensive, they reflect the country's commitment to welcoming visitors who can contribute to the local economy.

Who can apply for the DTV visa?.

To be eligible, you must belong to one of the following three categories

1. Workcation (Digital nomads, freelancers and remote workers)

The DTV visa is especially designed for those who work remotely for foreign companies or autonomously. If you are a digital nomad, freelancer or remote professional with activity outside Thailand, you can opt for this visa.

Although the Thai government has indicated that "not just anyone" can obtain the DTV under this category, to date no minimum criteria have been established for income, employer or social media presence. However, it is unlikely that the application will be approved if the authorities do not consider the foreign employer or declared activity legitimate.

2. Activities related to cultural interest in Thailand

If you don't work remotely but want to opt for this visa, you can also do so by participating in cultural activities that strengthen Thailand's international projection. These activities include:

  • Muay Thai courses
  • Thai cooking courses
  • Sports training
  • Medical treatments
  • Seminars or workshops
  • Music festivals

To increase approval chances, the activity or course should have a minimum duration of six months.

3. Dependent family members of a DTV visa holder

The DTV visa allows including direct family members of the main applicant. There is no maximum limit of dependents, but they must meet the following requirements:

  • Legal spouse
  • Children under 20 years old, single and dependent

Each dependent must submit their own application and pay the corresponding visa fee.
